10 Oils With Natural SPF (Infographic)
It's easy to forget that the largest organ in our body is actually on our bodies. Yep, our skin is far and away the largest organ we have.
On top of that, our skin is actually quite a permeable organ - meaning that any chemicals you put on your skin will also make it into your bloodstream (how do you think nicotine patches and testosterone creams work?). For this reason, it's wise to adhere to this principle:
Don't put anything on your skin you wouldn't also eat.
When it comes to sunscreens, this can create some challenges. 98% of sunscreens on the market don't pass the "would also eat" test. Would you want to eat a food that contains Oxybenzone, Octylmethoxycinnamate or Octocrylene? Neither would I. Yet they're all common sunscreen ingredients that have been shown to have serious toxicity issues in the body.
Fortunately, there's better options. Several companies make sunscreens using zinc oxide for SPF that pass (or come close to passing) my "would also eat test". I use this product from Kinesys.
There's also an even safer option. Several food-based oils have a natural SPF. (see chart below)
